Tim and I are reading a classic that we have actually had in our library for years. It’s “The Pursuit of God” by A.W. Tozer. This book is beyond rich and full of gold nuggets. I’m a highlighter so this book is getting devoured. I’d like to share a few portions from the book.
“You and I are in little (our sins excepted) what God is in large. Being made in His image we have within us the capacity to know Him. In our sins we lack only the power. The moment the Spirit has quickened us to life in regeneration our whole being senses its kinship to God and leaps up in joyous recognition. That is the heavenly birth without which we cannot see the Kingdom of God. It is, however, not an end but an inception, for now begins the glorious pursuit, the heart’s happy exploration of the infinite riches of the Godhead.
In making Himself known to us He stays by the familiar pattern of personality. He communicates with us through the avenues of our minds, our wills and our emotions. The continuous and unembarrassed interchange of love and thought between God and the soul of the redeemed man is the throbbing heart of New Testament religion. It is personal. It is conscious: it does not stay below the threshold of consciousness and work there unknown to the soul but comes within the field of awareness where the man can know it as he knows any other fact of experience.
Am I the only one that wants to shout “Halleluiah?” The God of this Universe wants a personal relationship with measly you and me. What has happened to the believers of today? Why isn’t there an excitement and passion to share about this beautiful miracle? If Tozer could see our world today, he would be shocked. Listen to his thoughts in 1948.
How tragic that we in this dark day have had our seeking done for us by our teachers. Everything is made to center upon the initial act of “accepting Christ” (A term, incidentally, which is not found in the Bible) and we are not expected thereafter to crave any further revelation of God to our souls. We have been snared in the coils of a spurious logic which insists that if we have found Him, we need no more seek Him. The experiential heart theology of a grand army of fragrant saints is rejected in favor of a smug interpretation of Scripture which would certainly have sounded strange to an Augustine, a Rutherford or a Brainerd. In the midst of this great chill there are some, I rejoice to acknowledge, who will not be content with shallow logic. They will admit the force of the argument and then turn away with tears to hunt some lonely place and pray, “O God, show me thy glory.” They want to taste, to touch with their hearts, to see with their inner eyes the wonder that is God. I want to deliberately to encourage this mighty longing after God.
Friends, your salvation experience is only the beginning of a relationship that will satisfy you like no other relationship. The scriptures tell us in Hebrews 11:6 – “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for the one who comes to God must believe that He exists, and that He proves to be One who rewards those who seek Him.” “If you seek Him, He will be found by you”, is in several places in the Old Testament. We, however, are under the New Covenant which means we have it much better because Jesus actually lives in us through the Holy Spirit. HOWEVER, we will have a hunger to know Him better and better IF we understand what all really happened at salvation.
If we have a correct concept of God, and understand how deeply loved we are, nothing will satisfy us like spending time with Him. Does that mean every single time I open the scriptures I am blown away? No, I’m not. I can practice spiritual disciplines with wrong motives and attitude. God looks at our hearts and He knows if we truly want to know Him more. And honestly, most of us humans (including myself) try everything else before we realize HE is the answer we are looking for. He wants us to experience our union with Him even more than we do and not just know about our union. Tell HIM, “Lord, open my eyes to the depth of my relationship with you and help me to know your true character and intentions for my life. HE WILL ANSWER THAT PRAYER.
